Retainer Care Guide
Keep your teeth from shifting
The First 3-6 Months After Treatment
The first few months after orthodontic treatment are essential for long-term success. Here’s how to keep your new smile looking its best:
-
Months 1-3: Wear your retainers day and night, removing them only for eating and brushing.
-
After Month 3: Switch to nighttime wear only, but continue every night to keep your smile in perfect shape.
-
Long-Term Retainer Wear: Long-term nightly use prevents unwanted shifts, maintaining your smile.
Retainers Can Stretch - When to Replace Them
Most people receive a single set of retainers, which can last around two years with careful use. However, clenching or grinding, which many people do unknowingly, can stretch retainers sooner. Wearing your first retainer nearly all day for the initial three months also puts extra strain on it. For added protection, we provide a complimentary retainer set after completing Invisalign and recommend upgrading to Vivera retainers. With three sets, you’ll always have a backup and can better track if your retainers are stretching over time.
Check Every 6 Months for Optimal Fit
With Vivera, you can swap to a new set every 6 months to keep your smile perfectly in place. If a new set feels tighter, it’s a sign your current set has stretched, and switching promptly helps prevent shifting.
Choose Vivera Retainers for Long-Term Stability
Vivera retainers provide the ideal solution for long-term stability, offering three sets right from your final Invisalign scan. This multi-set option allows you to monitor and protect your smile with ease, reducing the risk of shifts and preserving the smile you love.
Reorder Retainers Anytime
If you need more retainers, contact us to schedule a scan for Vivera or order replacements. You’ll want to be ready with a backup set, especially as you begin using your last pair.
Retainer Cleaning and Care
Use a soft bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water to clean your retainers after removing them from your mouth. Periodically soak in a cleaning solution. Tablets are available at the office, for your convenience.
